As a woman who has lived through many passages and learned through my larger than life experiences (positive and negative), I’ve discovered how to take a big empowering bite out of life.

Grace, Grit, and Glam: Traits of an Empowered Woman Over 50

Empowered women embrace their grit, grace, and glam.

As I think about my life, my girlfriends’ lives, and the lives of all the incredible women in my community, I see that being an empowered woman over 50 is a recipe baked with resilience, continuous learning and goal-setting, emotional intelligence, grace, and unshakeable self-confidence.

Empowered women are powerful but not power-hungry. We are strong without being domineering. We are assertive but never aggressive, and we know who we are.

Empowered Women are Resilient and Adaptable

In my opinion, resilience is at the heart of empowerment. Facing life’s valleys and hills with grace and bouncing back stronger than ever is the key to feeling empowered. But enduring hard things and coming through it stronger is only the first part of the equation. You must also adapt.

I remember when I first embraced new technology to manage my online business and stay connected with my team. We started using Slack to communicate. Maybe you are familiar with this software?

It wasn’t easy to learn the new platform and there were some bumps along the way, but being able to communicate quickly with my whole team was a game-changer. Like it or not, adapting to change keeps us relevant and thriving in a fast-paced world. An empowered woman embraces innovation and change, and she adapts with grace.

Knowledge is Power for the Empowered Woman

If you want to be an empowered woman, you must be a lifelong learner and dreamer. Whether you’re starting a new business later in life or picking up a new hobby, staying curious will keep you vibrant and dreaming will keep you curious.

Take, for example, navigating a mid-life career change. It can be daunting! It’s also a chance to reinvent yourself and learn new skills. Give yourself permission and space to daydream. Then set goals to accomplish your dreams. Embracing new knowledge and experiences will set you apart as an empowered woman over 50.

Emotional Intelligence and Strong Relationships

What is emotional intelligence? Darling, it’s about being smart with your emotions—understanding them, regulating them, and using them to connect well with those around you.

I’ve learned the importance of nurturing my tapestry of relationships whether the connection is my family, girlfriend, or a business relationships. Knowing how to have a successful heart-to-heart can save a relationship. Relationships provide support and love, and we all need them.

An empowered woman is not a lone wolf. She is a matriarch to many. She is aspirational, empathetic, intuitive, and a connector.

Empowered Women Radiate Inner Beauty

When you meet an empowered woman, you will feel her strength. Empowered women radiate self-confidence and embrace their inner beauty. I have unshakeable self-confidence and it comes from knowing my worth and feeling comfortable in my own skin. A woman’s inner beauty will shine through when she has a positive attitude towards life.

Outer Style and Grace

I think an empowered woman is also visible by her outer presence. Having confidence to express your personal style with confidence and poise is a trait of an empowered woman. There isn’t a “right” style or fashion statement. There isn’t a certain accessory that empowered women wear (but a nice watch never hurts!) Empowered women have the confidence to wear what makes them tick and their inner beauty gives it wings. Darling, trust me, confidence and meaningful inner beauty are what make women shine, regardless of age.

Powerful, Not Power Hungry

Empowerment and power hunger are often confused, but they are totally different. An empowered woman is secure in her own strength because she knows herself. She uses her power to uplift others, not squash them.

I am an empowered woman because I understand that my power comes from within and isn’t dependent on someone else not having power. I don’t need to control or dominate others to feel significant. Empowerment is nurturing and inclusive, and it creates an environment where everyone can thrive.

Empowered Women Empower Women

In my experience, empowered women are builders. They are builders of dreams, of friendships, and of community. For women after 50, loneliness can be a significant issue, but engaging with other women can make a world of difference. Empowered women make other women feel visible and connected, and in turn, the empowered woman feels visible and connected.

I have experienced women who would rather tear apart than unify. If you have friends like that, I recommend reading my story about how to press ‘delete’ on friendships.

Where Empowered Women Connect

Are you looking for a community of empowered women? You are in luck, because there are many of us out there. Here are some ideas to find community as an empowered woman:

Join or Create a Book Club

Reading and discussing books with others can provide intellectual stimulation and create long-lasting connections. A theme-focused book club is a fantastic way to meet like-minded empowered women. For example, if you are interested in connecting with empowered women who are interested in travel, create a book club where each month you “travel” to a different country through the pages of a book.

Attend Local Events

Check your city’s event calendar. Is there a gallery opening? Or a concert or community fair you would like to attend? Participating in local cultural, social, or community events is the perfect opportunity to expand your circle of empowered women and to nurture existing friendships.

As an empowered woman, you are an asset. Offer your time and skills to local charities or organizations. I love to find organizations that align with my beliefs and offer a hand. Not only does volunteering help those in need, but it also provides an avenue for empowered women to connect.

Engage in Online Communities

Join online groups that focus on interests or issues relevant to women over 50. I have found that virtual spaces can be a source of support, inspiration, and friendship.

If you are wanting to connect with other empowered women, I recommend joining my private Facebook groups.

Take a Class

When was the last time you learned something new? Remember that an empowered woman is curious! Pick something that intrigues you and enroll in a class or workshops.

I recently wrote about my experience taking a negotiation class. As an empowered woman, I knew I wanted to learn the skill of negotiation and didn’t let anything stop me.  Whether it’s a class to learn negotiation, cooking, or even computer coding, there’s always something new to explore and someone new to meet.

Be a Hostess

Here is something every empowered woman knows: If you want something to happen, you can’t simply wait and hope, you take action and make it happen. If you want to attend social events, create them! Plan and host regular get-togethers, such as coffee mornings, dinner parties, book club meetings, or themed events. You can be the one to bring people together.

Travel with Other Empowered Women

Plan trips with girlfriends or join travel groups specifically for women over 50. I believe seeing the world is empowering for everyone. When you travel with other empowered women, the shared experiences can create lasting bonds and wonderful memories.

Practice or Start a Hobby

To connect with other empowered women, join clubs or groups related to your hobbies, such as gardening, crafting, hiking, or travel. If you are looking for a new hobby as a woman over 50, here are some ideas of hobbies to try.

Be Active

Empowered women appreciate their physical health. You can find or build community when you participate in fitness classes, yoga sessions, or walking groups. I cherish my Pilates class and would recommend it to any woman.

Yoga and Pilates are great activities for empowered women after 50.
