Non-Toxic Winter Skincare

Non-Toxic Winter Skincare

Do you have sensitive skin, darling? Does the harsh winter weather where you live only make it worse?

Caring for your skin during the winter months may require some extra love and patience if you’re subjected to dry extremes, such as the freezing chill outside and all sorts of materials (like that favorite wool scarf you have) rubbing up on your face and neck. Even the dry heat in your home and traveling during the holidays can have an effect on your skin. And, can we talk about hand sanitizer?! Dry skin galore.

But there are ways to get through the chilliest parts of the year with less dryness, irritation, redness, and even breakouts. For example, keeping a balanced diet rich in healthy fats, dry brushing, and using products that moisturize your skin without stripping it of its natural oils are key. If you can find products that are non-toxic, that’s even better!

Today, I’ve rounded up some products that will help keep your skin healthy all year long.

Starting With a Balanced Diet

Fat gets a bad reputation, but some high-fat foods, which I’ve included below, are actually super healthy and incredibly nutritious. Avoiding saturated and trans fats and instead incorporating moderate amounts of unsaturated fats into your diet can help reduce the risk of heart disease and lower cholesterol levels.

  • Avocados
  • Cheese
  • Dark Chocolate (my favorite on this list ;))
  • Whole Eggs
  • Fatty Fish
  • Nuts
  • Chia Seeds
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Coconuts & Coconut Oil
  • Full-Fat Yogurt

Dry Brushing

Dry brushing is a great way to help your lymphatic system, which carries toxins to be filtered out, with detoxification and can actually be done all year long.

However, as we cozy up by the fire, wrapped in fleece blankets, we’re often less active during the winter months. That means our bodies aren’t detoxifying as quickly.

So how does dry brushing help your skin?

When your lymphatic system is clean, your skin will, in turn, be clearer too! And while the act of dry brushing may at first feel rough on your skin, it is great for smoothing out your skin – to the point where you may not have to moisturize as often. Who knew!

How To Dry Brush

Simply remove your clothes and on dry skin, before you hop in the shower, take the brush at your outermost hands or feet, and in long strokes towards your body, just brush inward towards your heart. Keep brushing for 5-10 strokes in each area and then continue on with your normal shower routine. It’s that easy!

The best part? This beneficial technique is cheap to do. You can pick up a high-quality dry brush right here for only $10.

Body Oils

For my skin, especially, sometimes I find that lotions simply don’t cut it in the dead of winter. Is anyone else with me?

That’s why I resort to using body oils instead. Right after I get out of the warm shower, I pat dry with a towel and apply the oil right away. This helps my skin lock in the moisture immediately. This method lasts longer than lotion for me, but I would love to hear your winter skincare secrets if you have any others! (Hint hint: coconut oil also works like a charm.)

Below are some of the body oils I’m loving. Plus, they’re all non-toxic, meaning there are no parabens. Always refer to the EWG safety list when seeking out alternative products. It’s like the best of both worlds… your skin looks soft, bright, and beautiful, and you avoid harsh chemicals, so you can feel great too!
