Making the Most Of This “Spring” Season

Making the Most Of This "Spring" Season

With spring here, but COVID still in the air as well, it can be easy to fall into a rut, both emotionally and when it comes to style. Who else is ready to finally put away those bulky sweaters and sweatpants.

Despite COVID and cold weather lingering in some states, we can all make personal changes to help push spring along and feel more confident. Darling, we can blossom ourselves! Today, I would like to share six tips to help you embrace your gorgeous style and reclaim your confidence as a visible, vibrant woman.

New Season

After a long winter, the arrival of springtime feels like a breath of fresh air. The warmer weather invites us to open our windows, let the sunshine in, and embrace the sense of renewal that comes with a new season. So many small changes happen in spring, from blooming flowers to longer days—take a moment each day to notice these events and enjoy the unique beauty of the season. It’s the perfect time to spring clean—not just your house, but your habits and routines as well. Many people shift their diet in spring to include lighter, fresher meals that match the season’s energy. As the seasons change, take advantage of the delicious spring produce that’s finally in abundance. Spring’s seasonal produce, like fresh spinach, crisp asparagus, and sweet strawberries, is at its peak for flavor and nutrition, making spring a wonderful time to enjoy fresh, seasonal food. Whether you’re planning to spend more time with family, get active outdoors, or simply savor the great time that spring offers, this season is all about making the most of every moment. So, step outside, breathe in the fresh air, and let the new season inspire you to try something new and delicious.

Style After 50 Isn’t Just About Clothes: Consider a Spring Clean for Your Hair

It’s said that a woman who changes her hair is about to change her life. After 50, it’s easy to fall into a rut. However, there is an easy way to break out of that rut and renew your sense of confidence.

Get a great new haircut. What do you have to lose? It’s just hair. It grows back. (Perhaps a little slower than it used to, but it will grow back.)

Smile and Feel Great About It

Having a positive attitude is a great way to renew one’s sense of joy. When you smile, what do you show the world?

Take great care of your teeth. Whiten them. There are many options on the market to whiten teeth from budget to blow the bank. What’s in your budget?

More importantly, studies have shown that just the act of smiling, even if you’re faking it, helps lift one’s mood. Even better? Smile and show those pearly whites. (Check out my tips for getting – and staying – happy. Hint: It takes work!)

Find Your Purpose This Spring

The best way to look gorgeous and feel great after 50 is, of course, to start within. Beauty is so much more than skin deep. Are you motivated, passionate, and entering this stage of your life with vibrancy and visibility?

If not, do something different! Find a purpose, find a passion. Find a reason to glow from the inside out. This is my top beauty tip!

Update Your Wardrobe

Like hair, it’s so easy to get into a style rut. What looked great ten years ago may not look great anymore. This is not to say there aren’t classics that are eternally chic.

But even a classic deserves an update – be it via accessories, a new handbag, or just a fresh take on how you style your clothes. Head to my Instagram for inspiration; I regularly share pictures of my favorite looks there.

Focus on the GOOD

Have you heard the saying that what we focus on grows? It’s essential that you concentrate on the things that you like about yourself, both mentally and physically.

Is your hair stunning? Are your baby blues still attention-getters? We all have a few things that dazzle, and those are the things on which we must focus.

I frequently get compliments from all types of people, and I can promise you I am not flawless. My neck? Let’s not even talk about it. My arms? I often wear long sleeves to keep them reasonably covered.

However, none of this affects that I am vibrant and visible and that I truly feel beautiful well after 50. I focus on the things I love about myself, and the things I’m not as fond of, I minimize. No one is perfect, and perfection is boring. I’m flawlessly happy with who I am!

Just Add Color

Babies are so beautiful, aren’t they? I recall wanting to just devour my delicious grandchildren. Those rosy cheeks. Those pink lips.

They have something many women over 50 are lacking, and that is natural color in their faces. As we mature, we tend to lose color in our skin. Lips are no longer pink, cheeks are no longer rosy. Oh well!

Fix this by using makeup to add pops of color. With the right makeup, we can drastically change our physical appearance. Embrace flattering hues of peach and pink on the apples of your cheeks. Don’t be afraid to opt for a bold lip. Line and fill the brows: After all, they frame your face! Embrace color and be bold.

More than anything, my beauty tip for women over 50 is to let the world see you. Don’t be a shrinking violet! You’re bold, you’re beautiful, you are visible and you are vibrant. You’re no baby, but you are a babe of the wisest, wittiest, most wonderful sort. Show it off!

Exploring Nature

With the return of sunny days and milder temperatures, spring is the perfect time to reconnect with the natural world. Visiting local nature preserves, taking a leisurely hike, or simply enjoying a stroll through your neighborhood park can do wonders for your health and well-being. These outings are perfect for kids, who love to splash in puddles or explore new places. Spending time outdoors helps reduce stress, boosts your mood, and fills you with energy for the new season. Gardening is another fun way to enjoy the fresh air—whether you’re planting small plants or tending to a full garden, it’s a rewarding activity that lets you watch life bloom right before your eyes. Don’t forget to soak up the sunshine, have a picnic, or even eat outside and enjoy fresh, seasonal foods. You could even try a new outdoor hobby or plan a weekend getaway or short camping trip. Spring is all about embracing the season, so make it a point to visit new places, spend time with loved ones, and enjoy the perfect time that this weather brings. Take advantage of spring to enjoy outdoor activities before the heat of summer arrives.

Spring Produce and Recipes

Spring is a season packed with fresh produce, making it a wonderful time to eat fresh, seasonal meals for better flavor and nutrition. Baby spinach, tender peas, vibrant asparagus, and tart rhubarb are just a few of the delicious veggies and fruits that are at their peak right now, showcasing spring’s seasonal produce. Try tossing together a hearty salad with fresh lettuce, juicy strawberries, and a sprinkle of feta cheese for a meal that’s as beautiful as it is tasty. Many people adjust their diet in spring to include lighter, more balanced meals that highlight the best of the season.

For breakfast or brunch ideas, dishes like deviled eggs or a spring veggie frittata are delicious ways to enjoy eggs in spring. If you’re in the mood for something sweet, a homemade rhubarb crisp is a classic spring dessert that’s sure to please and easy to make in the oven. Don’t forget about herbs like lemon balm and mint—they’re perfect for adding a burst of flavor to teas, salads, and even desserts. For a healthy, dairy-free option, blend up a spinach and strawberry smoothie, or whip up a homemade chicken and vegetable stir-fry using the best of spring’s seasonal produce. You can also try a grilled salmon dish paired with pineapple, avocado, and spring veggies for a protein-rich, flavorful meal. With so many fresh ingredients to choose from, your spring meals are sure to be both nutritious and delicious.

Some farmer’s markets are open year round, making it easy to find fresh ingredients in any season.

Creative Pursuits

Spring’s warmer weather is the perfect time to get creative and try something new. Whether you’re drawn to gardening, painting, or cooking, there are endless ways to enjoy the season. Outdoor activities like hiking, biking, or kayaking are not only fun but also a great way to stay active and soak up the sunshine. If you love DIY projects, consider building a planter box for your garden or crafting a cozy bench for your backyard. Feeling crafty? Homemade gifts like a jar of jam or a hand-painted card add a personal touch to any occasion. In the kitchen, let your creativity shine by making a homemade pasta dish loaded with fresh spring vegetables, or try a delicious shrimp and veggie stir-fry. Spring is a great time to embrace new hobbies, experiment with fresh ingredients, and make every day a little more fun.

Gardening for Joy and Wellness

Spring is the perfect time to dig into gardening and discover just how much joy and wellness it can bring to your life. As the warmer weather arrives, spending time outdoors becomes a true pleasure, and tending to a garden is a wonderful way to soak up the sunshine and fresh air. Whether you have a spacious backyard or just a few pots on a balcony, planting small plants like herbs or vegetables is a fun and healthy way to get started. Not only does gardening provide fresh produce for your favorite spring recipes, but it also offers a chance to bond with family and create lasting memories together. Growing your own vegetables and herbs means you’ll always have fresh ingredients on hand to add flavor and nutrition to your meals. Plus, the act of gardening itself is a great stress reliever, helping you unwind and focus on the present moment. Embrace the season by making gardening a part of your spring routine—it’s a healthy, rewarding hobby that brings beauty, flavor, and a sense of accomplishment to your life.

Connecting Through Community Events

Spring is a season of renewal not just for nature, but for our social lives as well. It’s the perfect time to get out and connect with your community through a variety of local events and activities. Many nature preserves and parks host special spring events, from guided hikes to gardening workshops, giving you the chance to learn something new while enjoying the great outdoors. Visiting your local farmer’s market is another wonderful way to meet local farmers and artisans, discover fresh, seasonal produce, and gather inspiration for your spring recipes. Don’t miss out on spring-themed festivals, flower shows, and outdoor concerts—these gatherings are a fantastic way to celebrate the season, make new friends, and feel more connected to your community. Whether you’re attending a gardening competition or simply enjoying a stroll through a spring fair, these events are the perfect time to embrace the spirit of the season and create new memories.

New Adventures to Try

With the long winter finally behind us, there’s no better time to create a spring bucket list and dive into new adventures. Start by exploring fresh spring recipes—try your hand at a delicious asparagus pasta, a vibrant rhubarb dessert, or a crisp salad packed with seasonal vegetables and herbs. If you’ve always wanted to try gardening, now is the perfect time to plant some fresh herbs or vegetables and enjoy the satisfaction of harvesting your own ingredients. Take advantage of the warmer weather and fresh air by trying a new outdoor activity, such as hiking, biking, or even kayaking. Each new experience is a chance to embrace the season, boost your mood, and make the most of every sunny day. Whether you’re excited to cook a new dish, spend more time in the garden, or simply enjoy the beauty of spring, your bucket list will help you savor all the joys this season has to offer.

Seasonal Decorating

As you welcome the new season, why not refresh your home to match the vibrant energy of spring? Swap out heavy winter decor for lighter, brighter touches—think fresh flowers, greenery, and cheerful colors that bring the outdoors in. Simple DIY projects like crafting a spring wreath or creating a seasonal centerpiece can instantly update your space. For a fun and fragrant addition, try making homemade candles or potpourri using fresh spring herbs and flowers. And don’t forget the kitchen—spring is the perfect time to try a new recipe that highlights the season’s best produce. A lemon and herb roasted chicken or a fresh salad packed with spring greens and herbs is both delicious and healthy, adding flavor and nutrition to your meals. Embrace the great time that spring offers by making your home a reflection of the season’s beauty and abundance.
