Benefits of Trying a New Hairstyle

A great hair cut can trim a decade off your age, no scissors needed.

Clean, soft lines flatter faces of all shapes and textures. The long bob, also known as the Lob, is a perfect example of a simple cut that’s both youthful and chic. And let’s not forget the pixie and the traditional bob… both are classic cuts that boast timeless good style. Today, I’m dishing on the benefits of trying a new hairstyle. After all, what do you have to lose?

The Benefits of Trying a New Hairstyle

A Confidence Boost

There is nothing quite like that feeling when someone notices your new haircut or hair color and tells you it “looks amazing!” Changing up your hairstyle can do loads for your confidence. Whether it is finally taking that dive and trying out a pixie cut or falling in love with a new trendy hair color, taking a chance on yourself is a great way to grow your confidence and love your new look.

Let Your Hairstyle Reflect the Change in Your Life

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, darlings! The only thing constant is change. Whether that is a new relationship after 50, retiring or moving to a new country, change is imminent and why shouldn’t your look reflect that? Changing up our look during a time of change is a great way to acknowledge that shift and start on the new leg of your journey with a hairstyle that suits your exciting future!

Let Your Hair Tell Your Story

Just like our clothes, our hair tells a story about ourselves. What our hairstyle says about us is a direct reflection of our personal style and personality. By changing your look, you can become whoever you want to be and feel confident in who you are. Let your hairstyle scream to the world, I’m still visible, vibrant, and beautiful!

The Style Options Are Endless

The Pixie

Judi Dench has a great pixie cut that flatters her face shape. The key to a great pixie? “Leave the length slightly longer than a traditional pixie, and add a little wax or pomade just to give it texture and separation,” explains stylist Matthew Shields of Sally Hershberger salon in NYC via Allure Magazine. Jamie Lee Curtis also boasts a flattering pixie cut, and has for years. (Note: the addition of Jamie’s fun, modern glasses which keep her look fresh and youthful.)

The Lob

The Lob, or long bob, works best on straight or wavy hair and on most face shapes although women with very thin of very thick hair should avoid it. Mary Steenburgen wears it well in a rich auburn hue with long bangs. (Did I mention that bangs are a great alternative to Botox for lines in the forehead?) And Naomi Campbell, who is 48 years old believe it or not, often sports a long, blunt lob paired with blunt bangs that flatter her face and bring focus to the eyes.

The Bob

Bobs come in all shapes and sizes as in the case of Helen Mirren who’s slightly layered bob with sides swept bangs flatters her oval face perfectly. Linda Fargo, who has been named “Bergdorf Goodman’s “gatekeeper of style,” is well known for her classic bob, always perfectly polished in a stunning shade of silver. And let’s not forget Anna Wintour who has sported the same bob for years, and yet remained the epitome of good style… proving that a great hair cut that flatters your face is truly timeless!

I recently changed mine! I let it go gray and had it cut like Hele Mirren has hers. Although I usually tuck mine behind my ears. You are right, I have gotten so many compliments. Darling picture of you!

I just last week cut my hair from a bob to a pixie. New year. New Hair. Its fun and I like it. And if I didn’t like it, it’s hair and it will grow out.

    • Susan "Honey" Good says:

Good for you. Change is good. There is no incorrect decision. Because, as you wrote if you do not continue to like the style, you can grow your hair out. Warmly, Honey

I am a hairstylist and have always want to try a red haircolor. My husband being a stylist as well has always said “I don’t think you will like that”. I recently decided in your 60’s you have that right to try something that you have always wanted to try, regardless. So I did!! And I get a lot of compliments on it! I am a 64 yr old with Violet Red hair! I love it! It is only hair and I can change it again if I choose!

  6. Jane Delgado-Shadid says:

I love the photo of you at the beginning of this blog. You look so extra beautiful.
I began going grey from coloring my hair brown to blond. So fun for a while then going to grey.

I like that you pointed out that our hair will tell a story about us because it will show your personality. I guess I need to make sure that I choose a style that will fit me. It just came to me to try a new style and get a haircut since I wanted a change in my look due to feeling like it looks too dull. However, I should think about these kinds of stuff as well before going to a hair salon. Thanks!

  8. That is a good point that changing up your hairstyle could do a lot for your confidence. Maybe it would be good for my wife to get a changeup in her hairstyle. Then maybe her confidence would be improved.

I liked how you said that changing up your hairstyle can really give you a confidence boost. My friend has been talking to me about maybe getting a pixie cut, but is a little afraid to take the last step. I think that it would be fun to see how a haircut like this will change the amount of confidence she has in herself.

I love what you said about getting a confidence boost. Visiting a barber shop is important when it comes to your hair. My friend needs a new barber, so I’ll help him find the best one in town.

  11. I liked that you mentioned that changing up your hairstyle can help bring you a lot more confidence. I’ve been wanting to do something different with my hair as it’s been the same for a long time. I’d love to get in touch with hair salon services near me and see what I can do to spruce up my look.

I like how the article explains that getting a new hair cut can provide a confidence boost as it gets people to notice you and often compliment you. Recently, I have been getting pretty bored with my current haircut and I am wanting to change it up and I am getting less confident with the way I look. Maybe getting a haircut would allow me to change my hair and feel more confident.

  13. Susan "Honey" Good says:

That is truly being a wonderful friend.I applaud you. I would do the same. It makes your friend feel good and you, as well. Warmly, Honey

I like that you talked about how changing your hairstyle could do loads for your confidence. I was chatting with my wife while we were resting earlier and it seems she wants to get a new hairstyle. I don’t think she could cut her hair on her own, so she should definitely ask for some help from a hair styling expert.

    • Susan "Honey" Good says:

She should get professional advice and then listen to her heart. It knows what she should do. Warmly, Honey
