OUTDOOR FUN WITH YOUR GRANDCHILDREN, THE ULTIMATE GUIDE

Of course, travel is a nice way to have outdoor fun with your grandchildren—we’ve done it several times, and it’s so rewarding. But I’m here to tell you that you can have a wonderful time and create lasting memories just by getting outside, talking to them, listening to them, and showing them new things. If you’re making plans for 4th of July or the summer, I hope your plans will involve taking your grandchildren on some outdoor adventures! If you don’t have grandchildren or nieces, nephews, or neighbor kids, take yourself outside! You won’t regret it. Here are my 8 recommendations for the best lakeside resorts, and here are my 2023 summer must-haves that include my absolute favorite sunscreen. Here are some ideas for outdoor fun with your grandchildren.

Have fun with your grandchildren outside this summer! Bonus idea: show them around your city or town!

OUTDOOR FUN WITH YOUR GRANDCHILDREN—5 WAYS TO SOAK UP THE SUMMER SUN

I’m always looking for ways to have fun with my grandchildren. My ‘grands,’ as I call them. And as the summer begins to come to a close, I know it’s more important than ever to get out and enjoy every golden ray. (With sun protection, of course!)

Watch this reel on Instagram and take a peek at some of my favorite summer hats!

Whether your grands are sweet little toddlers with chubby hands or teens with their faces buried in their phones, these outings will be a bonding experience that they will remember.

By the way, when you’re out and about, I think a belt bag is a much better choice than a traditional purse. Watch my video on Instagram, where I share how I like to wear them.

#1 WAY TO HAVE OUTDOOR FUN WITH YOUR GRANDCHILDREN: VISIT A GARDEN

Botanical Garden

Botanical gardens are the perfect place to see nature. Particularly if you’re one (or your grand is one) who prefers nature in a more manicured, curated way.

Not only can you explore glorious nature with your grands, but there’s also a lot to learn as well! See if your local botanical garden offers any classes, as many do!

Community Garden

If your grands live close enough or are spending some time with you this summer, joining a community garden is a wonderful idea. Do you know if your community has a shared garden? If not, ask around or search on Google. Spend time together cultivating the earth and reaping the rewards!

What’s your favorite way to have outdoor fun with your grandchildren? Please let our wonderful community know in the comment section below.

#2 HAVE OUTDOOR FUN WITH YOUR GRANDCHILDREN AT AN OUTDOOR CONCERT

When was the last time you attended an outdoor concert? I go every Tuesday evening during the summer with my Ultimate Concierge. I’m lucky that there’s one right across the street from my condo-in-the-sky at MCA Chicago. Watch my reel on Instagram!

I’m optimistic that if you do a little research, you’ll be able to find one near you. Your grands would love it!

#3 HAVE A PICNIC OUTSIDE WITH YOUR GRANDCHILDREN

Have a Picnic!

A picnic could go so many ways, whimsical and themed, high tea style, or simple PB and J’s! No matter which way you go one thing is certain, this is a fantastic way to have fun with your grands.

When choosing a picnic spot, consider the age of your grands.

  • Do you want to be near water?
  • In a scenic park?
  • Or keep it simple and go right out into the backyard.

How fun would it be to make it super fancy? Your grands would love it! Here are some picnic picks that I found:

#4 TAKE A FUN HIKE OUTDOORS WITH YOUR GRANDS

Nature cures all and your grandchildren will have a blast getting outside this summer!

Take a Hike

Taking a hike, especially when properly prepared, can be a great way to explore with your grands. But it doesn’t have to be a strenuous mountain hike. Unless, of course, your grands are a little older and you’re all in great physical shape. It could be a stroll on a path at a nearby park.

If you’re unfamiliar with local hikes and paths, Google is your friend. This website, Alltrails, is great for finding a trail near you! Just enter your zip and then find out what trail would suit your needs! This site has reviews where hikers let you know about the conditions of the trails and things to be aware of, and also if their kid-friendly!

Another option is to go directly to your local park system either by email, phone, or in person. They’ll be very familiar with your area and can guide you based on your needs.

When getting outside, either alone or with my grands, I always carry a small kit with things I might need. This company, First Honey, has fabulous products (and a great name, too!). I just brought them with me to Europe, and they came in handy! See my reel on Instagram here

#5 WAY FUN WAY TO GET OUTSIDE WITH YOUR GRANDCHILDREN, GO TO A MUSEUM

I say if you’re outside in nature, you can’t help but walk on the sunny side of the street!

Visit an Open Air Museum

Enjoy a day of art where nature is the backdrop. Open-air museums are each unique in their own way and are sure to hold lots of excitement for you and the grands! Research the place and plan ahead. Depending on how far away it is, you may want to pack a picnic or stop for breakfast or lunch.

To sum it up, get outside with your grands and have fun. If you plan well, use sun protection, and bring an emergency kit, you’ll have the time of your life. Your grands will never forget it.
