Make Your Eyes Sparkle This Year: How to Do Smoky Eyes After 50

How to Do Smokey Eyes after 50

Have you tried to embrace the look of a sultry, smoky eye, but have found the technique difficult? Sometimes, dear reader, we just have to mix things up. Embrace serendipity, as I like to say. Today, I’m sharing how you — yes, you! — can embrace a makeup trend that will put the “spark” into your sparkling 2022… How to do smoky eyes after 50.

Here’s how to rock the smoky eye in just four easy steps:

Steps to Accomplishing the Smokey Eye

Step 1 to Get Smokey Eyes:

Apply an eye primer, if you have one, or foundation and a coat of powder to the upper eyelids to “set” shadow and to serve as a base for smoky eyes. A primer will help keep shadow from creasing.

Step 2 to Get Smokey Eyes:

Apply a light brown or gray shadow to entire upper eye lid with a large eye shadow brush. Layer the same color on eyelid below crease to define your eyes, which adds depth.

Step 3 to Get Smokey Eyes:

Use a dark brown pencil (see tips below) to line upper lash line. Then, use a brush to soften the line. On the lower lash line, dot the pencil in several spots and use the brush to soften the line.

Sometimes, despite all the fancy options on the market, it’s best to simply stick to the classics. This Herbal Eyeliner Pencil Dark Brown by Palladio can be yours for less than $3. Get yours here.

Step 4 to Get Smokey Eyes:

Finally, apply your favorite mascara — preferably black — generously. (My favorite brand is the one below… Chanel!)

More Eye Liner Tips & Tricks

  • Tip 1: Always pull the skin taut with one hand while applying eyeliner with the other hand.
  • Tip 2: Put away the black liner and opt for a dark brown liner instead which can be more flattering and more forgiving of small mistakes.
  • Tip 3: Put eye makeup on before the rest of your makeup and use a Q-tip with eye makeup remover to clean up smudges. Once you’ve perfected your eyes, apply foundation, tint, and or powder.
  • Tip 4: Liner should only be applied from the center of the lash line to the outermost corner of the lower lash line.
  • Tip 5: To enlarge eyes, apply a dot of brown or black liner at the outer corner of eyes and a dot of iridescent crayon liner in white, gold, or silver at the innermost corner of eyes.
