Today, I’m sharing the best lipsticks for women over 50… and at all price points! But first, a thought: rules for women after 50 are basically made to be broken because life is really too short not to be bold, confident and you know my darlings, wear that red lipstick! Now, if you’re looking for a bold red red lipstick, I’ve covered that here. If you’re more into lighter and more neutral lipstick shades, then there is nothing wrong with that. As always, you do you! For older women and mature women, finding beauty products that enhance your features and boost your confidence is key.
Regardless of color, there is just something about a good lipstick that makes me feel proud, courageous and like I am ready to take on the world. If you’re a lipstick person, you know that wearing lipstick is a key part of many women’s beauty routines, especially as we age. If you don’t believe me, then take it from Elizabeth Taylor, “Pour yourself a drink, put on some lipstick, and pull yourself together.” I dare you to try it and see how you feel with a bold lip… at any age! To wear lipstick is a timeless act embraced by women of all ages.
The good news is that it’s just lipstick, pretty non-committal; if you don’t like it, then just wipe it off!
Lipstick is a beauty must! When we’re young, it’s often all about the color of the moment but as we mature, a great lipstick needs something we already have… staying power! Beauty writers and makeup artists often recommend the best lipstick choices for mature women, focusing on formulas that hydrate and flatter aging lips. Does that mean you need a pricey lipstick? Not at all, darlings. Quality comes in all types of lipstick cases so think of price like we think of our age — it’s just a number! I’ve tried many brands of beauty products over the years, and that experience helps me recommend the best lipstick for older women.

The best lipsticks for women over 50
I have compiled a list of some great brands to consider and split them up between two price points.
In terms of a lower price point, here are some quality, yet more affordable brands, all usually available at your local drugstore:
- Maybelline: I love the Color Sensational Creamy Matte Lip Color line in Rich Rudy, and it’s just $7.99. This is a matte lipstick with a comfortable matte finish that doesn’t dry out lips, making it a great choice for mature skin.
- Covergirl: My favorite from this brand is the Outlast All Day Lipcolor in Ever Red-dy for $10.99. It features a hydrating formula that helps prevent dry lips and keeps lips from feeling dry throughout the day.
- L’Oréal: I like the Cinnamon Toast color for a darker hue from the Colour Riche Lipcolour line, and it’s only $8.99. This lipstick has a creamy texture and creamy finish, making it easy to apply and especially suitable for mature skin.
If you’re really looking for a lipstick splurge, these lipsticks are excellent, but will cost you a little extra. They are best found in department stores, other dedicated makeup stores and online:
- Estée Lauder: The Pure Color Envy lipstick is excellent in all the colors and is $32 here. It is highly pigmented for bold color and is super hydrating, so your lips stay soft and comfortable.
- Chanel: The Rouge Color line is my favorite and it’s so hydrating. It is $37 here. This formula includes hyaluronic acid and other key ingredients that benefit mature lips by providing moisture and a plumping effect.
- Lancôme: I have found the best to be the Color Design Sensational Effects lipsticks. They come in several brilliant colors and are $23 here. These lipsticks offer a sheer finish that can be layered for a natural look, perfect for mature skin.
- MAC Cosmetics in Twig: I once read a review that said this was the most universally flattering color in the entire MAC line. My editors love it and it’s a wonderful warm, pinkish brown shade. Get it here for $20. The pillow talk shade is also an iconic color in the beauty world, known for its versatility.
- And, if you watched my last Facebook live you know that I swear by Tom Ford. It’s my “signature” lip hue and, in my opinion, one of the very best lipsticks for women over 50. I love Tom Ford’s Casablanca. It is one of my favorite staples. I know it is a Tom Ford customer’s favorite staple in their make-up routine because it has not been discontinued. The formula contains candelilla wax for long-lasting wear and a cushiony feel.
Some lipsticks may have a waxy feel at first application, but they quickly felt soft and comfortable on the lips, which is especially important for mature skin.
Other lipsticks that are popular among mature women include black honey for a natural, buildable tint and a glossy finish. Lip gloss and clear gloss are also great options for adding a youthful shine and plumper look to the lips.
Tip: For a fuller look, dab a bit of gloss on the cupid’s bow to enhance fullness. To avoid emphasizing thinning lips and lip lines, choose creamy or hydrating formulas over matte lipstick or matte finish options, as these can sometimes accentuate fine lines. Lip gloss and clear gloss can also be used as alternatives or finishing touches for a more vibrant, dimensional appearance.

Understanding Aging Lips
As we grow older, our lips naturally lose volume and moisture, which can lead to the appearance of fine lines, lip wrinkles, and dryness. This is a normal part of aging, but it can make finding the right lipstick and lip products for mature lips a bit more challenging. The good news is, with a few simple adjustments to your lip care routine and by choosing the right lipstick formulas, you can keep your lips looking healthy, hydrated, and youthful.
One of the first changes many women notice is that their lips naturally lose volume and definition. This can make the natural lip line less pronounced, and lipstick may start to feather into fine lines around the mouth. To address this, a good lip liner is your best friend. Look for a lip liner enriched with nourishing ingredients like castor seed oil and shea butter—these help keep your lips moisturized while creating a smooth, defined border that prevents lipstick from bleeding. Tracing your natural lip line with a creamy, hydrating lip liner can make all the difference in achieving a polished look.
When it comes to choosing a lipstick, hydration is key. While ultra matte lipsticks and some liquid lipstick formulas can be drying and accentuate lip wrinkles, a hydrating lipstick with a creamy or satin finish will keep your lips feeling comfortable and looking plump. Lipsticks that contain moisturizing ingredients such as coconut oil, sunflower seed oil, and vitamin E are especially beneficial for aging lips, helping to keep lips hydrated and smooth throughout the day.
Don’t forget the importance of a good lip balm or lip oil as part of your daily routine. Applying a nourishing lip balm with ingredients like shea butter or a lip oil rich in vitamin E and sunflower seed oil will keep your lips moisturized and prevent chapped lips. For an extra boost, gently exfoliate your lips with a lip scrub to remove dead skin cells and reveal a smoother surface for your lipstick.
Selecting the right lip color can also enhance your youthful appearance. Consider your skin tone when choosing a shade—cooler undertones can make your teeth appear whiter, while warmer hues can add a healthy glow to your complexion. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different colors until you find the one that makes you feel confident and radiant.
When applying lipstick, start at the center of your lips and work outward for a more natural finish. Using a light hand helps prevent lipstick from settling into fine lines or getting on your teeth. For an extra touch of youthfulness, dab a little gloss in the center of your lips to create the illusion of fuller, just-bitten lips.
With the right lip products and a few simple techniques, you can keep your lips looking beautiful and vibrant at any age. Remember, a well-chosen lip liner and a hydrating lipstick formula can help you achieve a smooth, defined, and youthful appearance—so you can continue to love lipstick and wear it with confidence, no matter your age.

I’ve been using Covergirl Outlast for years and love it too! They used to make a shade called Coffee Satin…my absolute favorite. But, they discontinued it. Why is it every time you find something you love and it works, they quit making it?? Sigh…
I may give your other suggestions a try. I really love that L’Oréal shade you like too.
Thanks for sharing all your finds!
I love to share my finds. I have the same problem. Every time I fall in love with a perfume, it is discontinued. The store told me it was a tariff. Hana Mori Hanae was shipped from Japan. Warmly, Honey
I love anything BEAUTYCOUNTER…especially the lipsticks and eyeshadows. The damaging chemical contents in so many makeup lines is alarming . Many times when I must quickly get out the door I put on a little lip gloss from Beautycounter and off I go.:)
Thank you for your comment. Most appreciated. Warmly, Honey
I am 56 and I am discovering that the darker lipsticks do not look so good anymore…they tend to draw more attention to my thinning lips and can bleed outside the lips…nothing says “I’m trying to hang on to my youth” more than “drawing” outside the lip line to make them appear bigger, especially with dark lipstick. In photos its not as noticeable but in person it looks bad! Also, I use less mascara, but curl them and use a lighter shade. Too much eye makeup only emphasizes the lines. Personally, I think it’s nice now to not have to “fuss” over my makeup….less is more at 56!
You are so young. You can buy a liner so your lipstick does not run. You do not have to fuss. Just have fun. Warmly, Honey
